The curtain has fallen on the seventh edition of Innovation Day, the biannual event dedicated to lending and financial institutions during which Geico, international leader in the design and manufacture of automated turnkey vehicle body painting plants, presents the state of the art of its projects, of its business strategies from a technological and cultural point of view, and of its future projects.
During the event, which is open to investors, journalists, partners, strategic suppliers and all stakeholders, participants discussed the innovations developed by Geico in recent years, advanced technological solutions culminating in the Energy Independence Day environmental sustainability project and the Smart PaintShop project, which catapults the entire trade into the era of industry 4.0.
The first part of the meeting was devoted to environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility, with two important objectives achieved by Geico three years earlier than expected. In fact, in 2017 the company reached the goal of Energy Independence Day, reducing energy consumption for the painting of an vehicle body from 900 kWh to 270 kWh. It is an exceptional achievement, the result of the highest level of engineering innovation, continuous technological research and environmental ethics. In 2005 the goal had been set to reduce consumption by 70% by 2020. Thanks to the intense activity of the R&D department, Geico is now able to guarantee a plant with a very low environmental impact.
Participants watched an in-depth video that illustrated the evolution of the plants from 2005 to today.
Geico’s technology and engineering developments blend with the Group’s profound sense of social responsibility, demonstrated by the second important announcement of the event: thanks to Geico’s J-Next project and the Pardis Foundation’s Gate Bridge project the company was able to do its part to contribute to youth employment. The J-Next project is an initiative launched in 2011 and still active today, involving the hiring and training of recent engineering graduates in the company, an important growth opportunity for the young people and for the human enrichment of the company thanks to their many fresh, brilliant ideas that drive innovation. Gate Bridge, promoted by Geico through the Pardis Foundation, has the mission of facilitating the hiring of young university and high school graduates aged between 18 and 30 in local businesses, acting as a mediator between companies and the youth and fully financing their placement within the companies.
Overall, from the start of these projects over 100 young people have been placed in the workforce.
The activities, projects and initiatives of the Pardis Foundation have been presented in an intense video featuring the many faces that are involved in its efforts on a daily basis. One big heart and great confidence in young people: these are the ingredients that allow Geico to work non-stop to do so much for the community through its Pardis Foundation.
The second part of the meeting was devoted to technological innovation, a topic introduced by Francesco Beraldi, one of Italy’s leading IT experts – President of Alkemy Tech, O2E and Seolab, board member of Talent Garden, ICT Sud, Alkemy SpA and partner of Superpartes – who explained to guests how the digital evolution has made it possible to enter the era of Industry 4.0.
An immersive presentation software, created thanks to a special virtual reality technology developed with Streamcolors, accompanied all of Geico’s presentations and allowed guests to enter the world of Smart PaintShop, the project that catapulted the Group into Industry 4.0 and that will revolutionise vehicle body painting plants. This next stage – which affects the spheres of efficiency, safety, quality, cost savings and respect for the environment – offers solutions for the geolocation of vehicle bodies, safety sensors to prevent malfunctions, the application of the Internet of Things to analyse and improve painting stages in real time, wearable technology for a perfect human-machine interaction, augmented reality and an innovative system for the management of energy consumption, all managed in the cloud by J-Suite, the “avatar” of the whole plant.
The second part of the event – opened with an exciting show put on by acrobats – continued on the stage of the Pardis Innovation Centre, the company’s pride and joy, the Geico research and development centre, the beating heart where technologies are discovered and developed on a daily basis. It was a journey into the future during which guests could observe and personally experience all the innovations that have brought the company and the whole industry into the era of Industry 4.0. In particular, it was possible to explore several different technological islands: the island of Production Flexibility with a functioning AGV, the IoT System island with BodyGeolocalization and the CTRL + PAINT vehicle body quality scanning system, the island of the Smart Management System with augmented reality for J-Doc, Virtual Commissioning and Smart Maintenance, and finally the island of the Smart Energy Management System.
Thanks to a special system of augmented reality, with Cardboard technology visitors were able to enjoy an even more spectacular journey.

Milan, 24 May 2017 – The Institute for Business Values (ISVI) and INAZ explore the story of Ali Reza Arabnia, who has relaunched the Cinisello Balsamo-based company by focusing on innovation, business culture and a responsible approach to enterprise. Video-dialogue with the economist Marco Vitale.
The case studies analysed in business schools often revolve around the same points: the profits achieved by the companies in question, the entrepreneurial success of the founders and the value generated for shareholders. Not all business stories are like that, however. In other cases, success is achieved through values, responsibility and putting people first.
It is exactly this type of case study that the Institute for Business Values (ISVI) and INAZ, through its Piccola Biblioteca d’Impresa [Small Business Library], have decided to focus on for their latest project: a film and book entitled Ali Reza Arabnia – The story and values of an entrepreneur.
The project profiles Geico Taikisha, part of the Gecofin Group which specialises in painting systems for the car sector, and in particular its CEO Ali Reza Arabnia, who has pulled off a small miracle by leading Geico out of economic difficulty and allowing it to once again compete on the international markets. How has he done this? By going against the current to choose a direction based on values, people and social responsibility.
“Arabnia took over Geico at a time of economic and financial crisis and promptly embarked on something of a revolution,” explains ISVI president and INAZ CEO Linda Gilli. “His approach to management combined the rational and emotional sides of the human brain, merging business efficiency with the satisfaction and motivation of his employees. He has driven both technological and cultural innovation, basing everything Geico does on the values of respect, propriety and openness. And he was right.” Thanks to the results of this approach, Geico is now a shining example for Italian SMEs of how to enjoy success in a global industry that is both saturated and highly competitive. Gilli continues: “ISVI, whose mission has always been to promote responsible entrepreneurship, was really keen to produce a video and book about the Ali Reza Arabnia story. We wanted to show that you achieve business success by putting values and people first.”
In the book, which is published by the INAZ Piccola Biblioteca d’Impresa, Alessandro Zattoni recounts the life story of Ali Reza Arabnia, from his first professional experiences – when his skills as an entrepreneur and leader came to light – to his and his wife Laura’s acquisition and management of Geico. The book is accompanied by a 53-minute video interview with Ali Reza Arabnia. Directed by Marco Manzoni, the video features a dialogue with business economist Marco Vitale.

The project is designed to encourage employees to “reflect on themselves” and improve their relationship with the world around them, with Geico providing all staff members with access to a “Philosophical Counsellor” during paid working hours.
By introducing the counsellor, the company is offering all its employees the chance to take better care of themselves by broadening their understanding of the relationship between themselves and reality. The sessions will be opportunities for private dialogue, exchange and discussion, during which the counsellor will listen attentively and allow the employee to express themselves without fear of judgement, speaking only to clarify points and analyse concepts.
During the sessions with the counsellor, the employees will explore personal and professional issues and analyse feelings and emotions in a rational manner. The aim of this is to construct a vision of the world which matches the employees’ values and to help promote actions and behaviours in line with how employees see themselves.
The key concepts here are the importance of self-respect and the human need to make sense of their experiences, and indeed a philosophical counsellor views humans as the central point of a network of relations and experiences which forge and change us.
The Focus Persona project aims to put people first, recognising that all people are individuals with possibilities and characteristics that can be used to support their development and improvement within the work environment. Ultimately, the initiative is about having faith in people and their potential. During individual meetings, time is seen as a valuable resource that can be used for self-improvement. Philosophical counselling believes that positive relations in the place of work derive from the balance that a person finds within themselves and can apply to all walks of life, including colleague relationships. In this respect, investing in people is a big plus for the company, which will grow through its employees and their individual attributes, in a virtuous cycle of faith, recognition and respect.

The philosophical counsellor is available to anyone wishing to confront thoughts or experiences that may be causing them distress, work through existential doubts or unproductive thoughts, adopt a practical approach to their immediate environment, take informed life choices, explore their vision of the world, analyse the compatibility between their beliefs and their lifestyle and promote change.
Through philosophical reflection, this type of counselling is about pursuing a deeper understanding in order to shine a light on the true meaning of things. It aims to explore the relationship between thoughts and to place them in order of meaning, emphasising that the rational faculties of an individual are a tool for analysis and comprehension.
Clearly, the decision to launch the Focus Persona project is part of Geico’s wider strategy of placing greater emphasis on individuals.
As part of this, in 2013 the company opened the Giardino dei Pensieri di Laura [Laura’s Garden for Thinking], which Ali Reza Arabnia dedicated to his wife Laura and their extended family: the Geico employees. All initiatives dedicated to employee wellbeing are born and nurtured within this space. Indeed, as well as being a place to spend time together and for physical and mental regeneration, the Giardino dei Pensieri di Laura is the embodiment of the president’s business philosophy and the realisation of a long-held dream.

It’s been a record-breaking start to the year for Geico. The global leader for automised car painting systems has once again seen off stiff international competition thanks to its innovative technology, with the Geico Taikisha group’s annual revenue reaching $1.8bn and the organisation now employing 5000 people across 52 sites in 28 countries around the world. The company has consolidated its partnership with Mercedes and Toyota, who have contracted Geico to build two facilities in Russia and Great Britain.

After choosing Geico for two facilities in Brazil and India, German car manufacturer Mercedes has once again turned to the organisation for its new venture in Russia. The plant is situated in the manufacturing area of Esipovo, around 40km north-west of Moscow. The CKD plant will produce 30,000 SUV, GLE, GLE Coupé, GLS and Class E vehicles every year. When it opens in 2018, it will employ 1000 members of staff.
The order is yet more proof of the confidence the German car manufacturer has in Geico’s innovative approach and the hi-tech solutions it provides, particularly in terms of reducing harmful emissions and energy usage, of which the new Drycar scrubber is a fine example.

The Cinisello Balsamo-based company has also recently received a new order from Japanese car giant Toyota in England, specifically Burnaston, Derby, in the East Midlands. The order refers to a facility for painting the plastic bumpers for the Toyota Avensis and Auris models. The facility will use a fully automised painting system similar to the one used in the two facilities built by sister company Taikisha in Kentucky, USA. “In full accordance with the standards required by Toyota, the facility is the embodiment of the efficient partnership between Gieco and Taikisha, whose global alliance is built on unparalleled technological expertise,” explains Ali Reza Arabnia.
It is clear that these impressive results are the product of a first-rate company environment. Gate Bridge is the first project supported by the Pardis Foundation, which was set up by the Arabnia family with the mission of helping young graduates and school leavers between the ages of 18 and 30 find jobs in local companies. The project plays an important mediatory role between the various parties and finances all costs relating to the young person’s incorporation into the company.
The project, which was inspired by Geico’s experience of helping young people into roles within its own organisation, offers a concrete opportunity to young people looking for work, helping them to take on an active role within the community.
Launched in 2015, Gate Bridge has already generated some impressive results. In its first year of operation, the project set up 12 internships, of which nine turned into full hires. A further seven internships were launched in 2016, with two having finished and another five set to end in February 2017.

With help from its partners AFOL Monza e Brianza and Assolombarda, the Pardis Foundation selects the young people to place in local participating companies and provides the finance necessary to launch the six-month internships.
The project includes three cohorts per year, with applications open to any young person who has been in a position of professional instability for at least six months. Specific information is provided as to the number of positions open and the deadlines for applications, both for the companies and the young people. More specifically, the essential attributes necessary for young people to apply are professionalism and reliability, while companies must be able to demonstrate their ability to offer a development path capable of continuing even after the six-month internship.
“The aim is to find young people between the ages of 18 and 30 who are serious about looking for work but, for whatever reason, haven’t been able to find any,” adds Ali Reza Arabnia. “We want to help place these in local Lombard companies by acting as mediators and financing the six-month internships. This has no economic or professional reward for our group – it is simply our way of giving something back to the community.”
In December, a new round of vacancies was announced with some of the most prestigious companies in Lombardy. There are currently 11 positions open: a web server and applications developer, a mechanical, electrical or automotive engineer, an electrical or telecommunications engineer, an IT systems assistant, a junior critical services systems analyst, a social media communications and marketing assistant, a communications and marketing assistant in the electromechanical sector, a quality control assistant, an electrician, a waiter and a welder.

These are the values upheld by Geico, a global leader in the design and manufacture of turnkey automated vehicle body-painting systems, which led to the decision to support Human’s Garden.
From the very early stages of this project, Geico has strongly believed in this idea, which is perfectly consistent with the Group’s approach.
In early 2016 two young engineers, Luca Lancini and Raffaele Moretti, met President Ali Reza Arabnia and described what at the time was only an idea. A simple but revolutionary idea: to start up a company that could generate value for the community, by providing tools to those who have the capabilities but not the means to implement them.
This is how Human’s Garden started: a group of 10 entrepreneurs who share the desire to “do something” – something new, something useful and focused on the local environment where they live. And a group of young graduates from diverse backgrounds, willing to put time and dedication into the project. A number of professionals who are attracted by the idea and try to contribute to it.
Human’s Garden is an innovative startup with a social mission, created at the initiative of this group of businessmen and professionals who, inspired by tradition and a thorough analysis of the concept of environmental, social and economic sustainability, developed an interesting method of cultivation that can reproduce the cycle of nature.

The basic process is aquaponics, i.e. the combination of raising fish and growing plants in a structured and recirculating ecosystem, in which bacterial cycles convert organic waste from fish into nutrients for the plants. A simple, sustainable and natural food production method that integrates the best characteristics of aquaculture and hydroponics, but without any waste of water, filtration or addition of chemical fertilizers.
One of the aspects that make this project truly innovative is the social impact it will have on the territory and the communities who live there. In effect, the basic goal is to subvert the practices that have prevailed in social activities for many years, to change radically the relationship between businesses and the communities in which they operate: rather than giving away something, teach how to produce it.
“We want to create a real, replicable example of a driver whose purpose is the generation of value. What if innovation were simply going back to working together, uniting and believing that simple cooperation between the different stakeholders involved can create added value? We undertake to redistribute any profits to other entities engaged in community activities in our region,” said Raffaele Moretti, one of the young people involved in the Human’s Garden project.
Human’s Garden is a ten-year not-for-profit project. After ten years, the company will be allocated to parties who will be free to decide which business to pursue, whether for profit or non-profit. In any case, all added value will be used for social purposes.
Human’s Garden is located in the heart of the Franciacorta region, on a plot consisting of 5,000 sqm of covered area (greenhouses) and about 23,000 sqm of land. In addition to the evident benefits of its being internationally recognized for winemaking excellence and as an agricultural and industrial hub, we have chosen this area also with the aim of redeveloping an abandoned district of very high landscape value.
“We have been very excited about this project from the outset. Ever since Luca and Raffaele discussed it with us the first time. We identify with all the principles that have inspired it and we are happy to support the growth of such a groundbreaking idea. We admire the commitment and determination that these two young men are demonstrating with the aim to give a practical contribution to the growth of their region, also in terms of employment, so as to return to our children the rich and luxurious land we received from our forefathers,” said Ali Reza Arabnia, President and CEO of the Geico Taikisha Group.
“We had the opportunity to listen to Mr. Arabnia talking about Gate Bridge, an interesting project aimed at hiring young graduates aged 18 to 30 years in local companies. We had the impression he shared the same concerns that drive our own projects. We took the liberty to ask for a meeting so we could present our idea. He agreed to meet us. TECHNICAL INFORMATION ON AQUAPONICS:
Aquaponics is the combination of raising fish and growing plants in a structured and recirculating ecosystem, in which bacterial cycles convert organic waste from fish into nutrients for the plants. A simple, sustainable and natural food production method that integrates the best characteristics of aquaculture and hydroponics, but without any waste of water, filtration or addition of chemical fertilizers.
This system transforms the main weaknesses of each of these techniques into great advantages for each other. Indeed, in aquaculture the problem is filtering the water to remove the fish waste, which would otherwise make the environment toxic; in hydroponics, continuous supply and manual balancing of chemical nutrients are required to keep the plants alive. The bacteria introduced in the ecosystem convert ammonia contained in organic fish waste – thus cleaning the environment – into complete nutrients for the plants.
Clearly, the synergy that is created between these two systems allows to recreate the typical balance of ecosystems in nature. This collaboration is only possible thanks to the key role played by bacteria, which converts the ammonia contained in biological waste from fish into complete plant nutrients. As this is an organic process in a natural and self-balancing ecosystem, any substances introduced from the outside like pesticides, in the case of plants, or hormones and antibiotics, in the case of fish, would result in the disruption of this balance.
In effect, fertilizers would compromise the fish habitat and its well-being, and the chemicals added to stimulate fish growth would cause an immediate imbalance and consequent suffering of the plants on the other side of the ecosystem. In this way, this naturally self-balancing system is synonymous with efficiency and ease of management, as well as a guarantee of total naturalness.
Following this reasoning, aquaponics growers are proud breeders of bacteria. The animals that feed the system are fish, but the engine are the bacteria that convert fish waste into energy and nutrients for the plants.
Among the hundreds of bacteria that inhabit the aquaponic system, only two types carry out the crucial task of transforming the toxic ammonia produced by fish into benign nitrates, i.e. nitrosomonas and nitrospiras. These bacteria are called “nitrifying bacteria”, and can be summarily described as follows:
– They are aerobic and autotrophic because they need air to live and are able to utilize inorganic compounds (ammonia and nitrites) as energy sources. Heterotrophic bacteria are also essential within the system, as they are able to synthesize organic compounds.
– They need large areas where to settle and colonize.
– Very high nitrite and ammonia conversion efficiency.
– Nitrifying bacteria reproduce by binary fission and are therefore able to double their number in 15-20 hours depending on environmental conditions.
The precious work done by bacteria can be summarised as follows: the first type of bacteria, nitrosomonas, create nitrites as a product of the ammonia consumption. However, these nitrites are still toxic to fish and are a weak resource for plants.
The second type of bacterium, nitrospira, attracted by nitrites consumes the latter, producing nitrates that are an excellent source of nitrogen for plants.

Presented for the first time at the 2016 International Fair Innotrans, Berlin, Next is the first modular electric vehicle prototype, created by Tommaso Gecchelin and Emanuele Spera, capable of travelling alone or coupled with other modules, for use as a means of transport or for other services, such as mobile bars and catering.
Next is a mobility idea which entirely rethinks transport for the future: a means of transport capable of transforming according to needs, while reducing pollution and traffic.

On occasion of the “SURCAR International Awards” which took place in Shanghai on 7th September, Geico was awarded 3 prestigious prizes for innovation in three different categories.
Surcar has always been the most eagerly awaited event in the world, where the biggest names of the automotive sector, clients and suppliers all meet to discuss trends, technologies and innovation in the field of bodywork paintwork.
J-Doc was awarded in the “Startup and Commissioning” category for its state-of-the-art system for managing the painting plant documentation.
Geico’s new oven, designed with particular focus on the optimisation of air flows to reduce emissions and guarantee reduced energy consumption, won the “Lean, Plant and Process design” category.
The “Environmental footprint” category was won by Dryspin, the revolutionary system for the dry separation of painting overspray.

The Geico Taikisha alliance celebrates its 5th anniversary with an exponential growth of sales confirming the worldwide leadership of the group in the design and manufacture of turnkey automated pianthsops for the automotive industry.
The Geico Taikisha Group has an average turnover of $1.8 billion, with 5,000 employees, more than 50 offices and 6 manufacturing units worldwide.
Geico’s origin goes back to the Italian division of Carrier Drysys, founded in 1905 and acquired by Giuseppe Neri in 1976, who then renamed it to Geico Spa. For structural and financial needs required by the automotive industry, Geico is immediately co-owned with other multinational companies including Haden, and the Fiat-Comau Group. In 2005 Ali Reza Arabnia, son-in-law of the founder, Giuseppe Neri, acquires back Geico from the Fiat Group and, in just five years, manages to raise the company up from a period of crisis and bring it to being one of the world’s leading suppliers of turnkey automated pianthsops for the automotive industry.
All this was possible as Arabnia decided to invest a lot on research and development, especially during the economic crisis in 2009 so that the company would have been competitive during the market recovery. It is with this objective that the Pardis Innovation Centre, which is Geico’s R&D centre, was born.
This innovative and highly specialized approach and the avant-garde technologies developed by Geico in this years led the company to be recognized as a particularly desired partner for the major automakers around the world. However, due to the small size of the company (in terms of sales and employees) many collaborations did not work out.
Therefore, the meeting with Taikisha – Japanese giant, specialized in the realization of paintshops for automotive industry – was crucial: in 2011, the alliance that will lead to the birth of the Geico Taikisha group is signed and can now count on a greater financial strength and increased internazionalization.
After the alliance, Geico was able to acquire and complete large plants all over the world, while Taikisha was able to gain all the advanced technological know-how, in terms of lowering both the energy consumption and CO2 emissions, developed by Geico during the years of the crisis.
In this regard, Ali Reza Arabnia, President, Chairman & CEO of the Geico Taikisha Group, says: “The greatest benefit we got from this alliance is the trust we had from our customers. In these five years Geico has done a number of important projects, also among its stakeholders.
One of these projects is the Energy Debt Free Project, consisting in the planting of trees around the world to compensate the company’s CO2 production, the opening of the Laura’s Garden of Thoughts in the Italian HQ that is designed for the welfare of the employees (inside there is a restaurant, a gym, a theater, an art gallery, as well as medical care, psychological care and philosophical care), the inauguration of the Campus Pippo Neri, an academy where every Friday afternoon training courses for the employees are held. In addition, the inauguration of the J-Next Club, with the aim of training and hiring young graduates as a “service” to the country. Finally, the inauguration of the Pardis Foundation, a nonprofit institution, fully funded by the Arabnia family, with the aim of placing 100 young unemployed, by 2020, in local companies, financing the trial period.
At the moment, the group is focused on a very ambitious goal: to build the first self-sufficient paintshop by June 16, 2020, the Energy Independence Day, enstablished by Geico to present their results in sustainable innovation. Since the beginning of the project, which took place in 2005, when a plant burned about 900 kWh per car body, the company has reached several important milestones. Nowadays, Geico is able to build plants that consume 310 kWh for the coating of each individual body .

In perfect coherence with the respectful approach towards people and the environment which has always distinguished the Group, since 2014 Geico has been collaborating with Treedom, the innovative start-up created in 2010 in Florence by a young team determined to make the world a better place.
Treedom started from an incredible idea: to plant trees all over the world to make it a better place. This means promoting the implementation of agro-forest projects with the aim of achieving an array of benefits for the environment. The association has since become an important reference for all those who wish to help the environment, and not only. Since 2014, 250,000 trees have been planted in Senegal, Cameroon, Malawi, Argentina, Haiti, Italy, Kenya and Burkina Faso, with considerable positive impacts, also in social terms.
Treedom became a B Certified Corporation in June 2014, thus entering a network of enterprises which distinguish themselves in virtue of their environmental and social performance.
Treedom projects in Italy supported by Geico involve deprived areas with extremely high levels of unemployment, school drop-out rates and a lack of social services. Obviously with dangerous consequences for youths who live there. Geico-sponsored planting activities mostly occur on lands confiscated from the local Mafia and involve not only plantation, but also intense processing activities for agricultural products and a few services for tourism. Understandably, all this provides tangible employment and growth opportunities for the entire area involved.

Cooperativa Sociale Resistenza Anticamorra – Naples
The project is based in a peripheral area of Naples, specifically in the municipality of Scampia Chiaiano, on 14 hectares of land confiscated from the camorra, located in Selva Iacandona, Chiaiano.
Work placement opportunities are available to approximately 40 minors on these 14 hectares of land. The project also extends to activities for the transformation of agricultural products, and services for tourists in search of rural peace and tranquillity, without having to travel far, characterised by a new and respectful relationship with nature.
Therefore confiscated assets are transformed into work and growth opportunities for the area’s population. Agro-forest projects support a renewed relationship between youths and the land, grounded in the rediscovery of legality, the construction of new ties with nature and work, the bearer of rights and citizenship.
Libera Terra – Cooperativa Beppe Montana
The association Libera Terra was created in 1995, with the intention of stimulating civil society in its fight against the Mafia as well as the promotion of legality and justice. Currently Libera Terra coordinates over 1600 associations, groups, schools, ground level entities which are locally committed to the construction of political-cultural as well as organisational synergies, in order to spread the culture of legality. Libera Terra was created with the purpose of promoting wonderful yet difficult lands, starting from the social and productive recovery of assets confiscated from the Mafia, to obtain high quality products using methods which respect the environment and the dignity of people. It is also active in the local area, involving other producers who share the same principles, promoting the organic farming of lands.
Cooperativa Beppe Montana was created in 2010, the first ever Libera Terra cooperative in the Catania and Syracuse province. It pursues the objective of legality and justice, starting from the social and productive recovery of goods confiscated from the Mafia, to obtain high quality products using methods which respect the environment and the dignity of people.
Libera Terra – Progetto Vesuvio
Activities take place in two specific zones located in the inner land areas of the Vesuvius National Park: the lands of the Medicean castle of Ottaviano, an asset confiscated from the Mafia, and the lands of a therapeutic community for drug addicts in the Somma Vesuviana area, specifically in Masseria Allocca. The subjects involved are the social cooperative “OTTAVIA”, focused on employment opportunities for people with disabilities, and the association IL PIOPPO ONLUS, a social agency for territorial action. In total there are approximately 8 hectares around the castle, with an additional 10 hectares of the community. Both lands have PDO recognition (protected designation of origin for apricots, plums as well as coda di volpe and catalanesca grape varieties, not to mention the famous piennolo cherry tomato).
Since the outset, Geico has also been focused on social issues: «We believe in the future and in the need to help as much as we are able to. This responsibility we feel towards the environment and society tangibly crystallises in actions which lead to an improvement of our planet’s life. In the meanwhile Geico’s Green Spirit has kept carrying on several initiatives, among which the Ecological Debt Free Day in 2009 and now this reforestation project.
Travelling means CO2 emissions and Geico wants to compensate the debt with the planet, giving its contribution to several reforestation projects in rural communities both in the South of the world and in Italy.
Thanks to these initiatives, several fruit, forest and endangered trees are planted according to the specific needs of the area with respect of its biodiversity.
The projects are carried on by local people (single farmers or little farmers co-ops). The consequent sense of responsibility, the active involvement and the sensibilisation strengthen the co-ops’ empowerment, starting a vituous circle based on respect for natural resources.
The fruit trees remain at farmers’ disposal, thus increasing those communities’ market power thanks to the sale of fruits and their products.
Geico contributed to plant 800 trees in Kenya and in Italy, to compensate CO2 emissions of 2014, and more 720 will be planted for 2015 emissions.
Nissan chooses Geico for its project of a new paint shop in Sunderland, UK. Once again Geico’s innovative solutions make the difference thanks to their top-level technology and their focus on environmental sustainability.

In the new plant, with a yearly production of more than 300,000 vehicles, including passenger cars and SUV of the luxury brand Infiniti, Geico’s cutting-edge technological solutions will reduce energy consumption and running costs by 25%, as well as zero water consumption and limit VOC emissions, making Nissan plant a tecnological benchmark in its field.
Another important step towards June 16th, 2020, the Energy Independence Day, when Geico will be able to offer its customers a completely self-sufficient paint shop.

According to the most recent statement from Italian statistics agency ISTAT on last year, employment has increased by 186,000, a 0.8% rise on the year before. In terms of young people between 15 and 24, the 2015 unemployment rate has shrunk to 40.3% (2.4% less). This is the first annual decrease in this age bracket since 2007. The rate of unemployment for 25-34 year olds has come down to 17.8% (0.8% less compared to 2014).
“Young people are the driving force of our economy. They’re our future and bringing the best out of them is essential to add fresh ideas and innovation to any type of activity. We entrepreneurs have a huge responsibility towards society, from the micro-community of employees in our business to the macro-community that surrounds us. For this reason, it’s important to persistently, intelligently and stubbornly implement projects that can have a positive influence on the economy as a whole, and in particular on youth employment.
In this respect, we at Geico have set up a programme, J-Next, aimed at offering recent graduates a chance through a genuine path of development. As part of this, they will be offered the opportunity of working directly at our plants all over the world.
The jobs are not based on the actual needs of the company; we’re dealing with an investment apparently without return or, to be more specific, without financial return because in reality it represents our contribution to the fight against youth unemployment. This is the biggest return we could have: the satisfaction and pride of being able to help a young person set themselves up, and by extension their family, are priceless.
These motivations led us to creating the Fondazione Pardis, with its debut project Gate Bridge. The objective before 2020 is to find 100 young people aged between 18 and 30, who are actively looking for work but for various reasons cannot find it, and get them into local businesses in Lombardy, carrying out a role as mediator and financing internships of six months each. None of this has direct financial and professional benefits for our company; it’s purely an example of social work for our community.”

Increasingly near to the goal of the Energy Independence Day, which involves the construction of a energy self-sufficient paint shop, consisting of a 70% cut of the energy consumption and a 30% use of renewable energy.
Geico, an international leader in the design and manufacture of automated turnkey vehicle body painting plants, keeps cutting the energy consumption, reaching a -22% on consumption compared to a traditional solution with the innovative design of the J-Hive painting booth, a revolutionary octagonal cell for painting car bodies.
In recent years, Geico has heavily invested in innovation, creating the “Pardis Innovation Centre”, a technology centre of excellence for research and development. The goal is to create the first energy self-sufficient paint shop by June 16th, 2020, the Energy Independence Day, the day when Geico will present its results in sustainable innovation. From the beginning of the project in 2005, when a paint shop used to burn about 900 kWh per body, the company has reached several important milestones. In 2013, it was inaugurated the Qoros plant in China, designed and made by Geico, where consumption is about 450 kWh per body. Today, Geico is able to realize plants which consume 315 kWh for coating a single body.
The J-Hive cell, fully patented by Geico, is another step towards the Energy Independence Day. The project, in fact, allows the use of a single robot for painting both the interior and exterior of the body and, thanks to its octagonal shape, it not only allows to reduce the space occupied by the cell but also decreases the air in the booth, thus reducing the energy consumption of 22%. This also ensures a reduction of the footprint by 27%. This innovative product, which was presented at Surcar Conference in Shanghai, the most important international conference in the automotive world, won the Innovation Award 2015, the prestigious award given to the most innovative companies.

Geico is confirmed once again in the German market as a technological partner, being awarded the new paint shop of MAN, Volkswagen Group, in Munich. The German delegation had proof of this technology’s potential, running several functional tests at Geico’s R&D facility, Pardis Innovation Centre. “This is another important passage for us”, explains A. Milan, xx November 2015. Geico, a world leader in vehicle-painting plants, is continuing its commitment to youth employment with J-Next in 2016 as well. This programme was set up in 2013 and every year oversees the hiring and training of recent engineering graduates at the company.
After an initial screening, the young candidates are invited to send in a video CV in order to evaluate their competencies and studies undertaken. Those who pass this second stage are contacted to take part in an assessment day at Geico’s headquarters. Finally, the chosen youngsters are then taken on board, initially on a six-month paid internship. This period is geared to lead into full-time employment on a 12-month contractual basis, during which time the individuals will be sent to the company’s different locations abroad to complete their skill-set. Geico is investing in the comprehensive training of its young employees, offering them a helping hand in their development through ad-hoc courses, like management courses, internal Masters programmes, IT training and language courses.
The project is open to graduates from the Faculty of Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano. They can send in their CV through the university’s Career Service or any young Italian engineer can apply through LinkedIn or by emailing email@example.com.

For the second year in a row, GeicoTaikisha excels in Surcar by winning the Innovation Award 2015. Surcar has always been the most important international conference in the world, where the key players are called upon to present, discuss, and evaluate new trends, technologies, and innovations in the car body painting market. During this year’s edition, which took place in China, GeicoTaikisha distinguished itself from its competitors thanks to the innovative system J-Hive, an octagonal painting cell that, compared to any other product existing on the market, is able to reduce energy consumption by 22% and to cut initial investment costs. The Innovation Award recognizes all the investments GeicoTaikisha is doing in Research and Development that besides bringing excellent economic result, demonstrate, once again, the outstanding quality of the company’s human resources. In addition, this prize proves that Italian firms are able to distinguish themselves at an international level for both quality and originality of their products. The other two prizes assigned during the conference, the Technology Award and the Giury Award, were given out to BMW and Jaguar Land Rover respectively.
Daryush Arabnia is awarded the “Premio Next” at the Best To Brianza Awards 2015. Friday night, more than 400 entrepreneurs of Monza Brianza, Lecco and Como, attended the event organized by the magazine Best to Brianza at the “Autodromo Nazionale di Monza”. GeicoTaikisha wins the “Next” Award for generational continuity, a widespread and shared theme that represents an asset for the entire economic and social system because it ensures the enterprise to resist and adapt over time. A livello tecnologico sono emerse le ultime soluzioni impiegate negli impianti di verniciatura che consentono a Geico di raggiungere livelli di consumo per scocca tra i più bassi del settore (330 kWh per scocca) e ha ribadito l’ambizioso obiettivo di realizzare un impianto di verniciatura a impatto zero dal punto di vista energetico per il 16 giugno 2020, l’Energy Independence Day.

The German car manufacturer, Mercedes, chose Geico for its new project in South America.
The project consists of a greenfield paintshop located in Iracemápolis (San Paulo State) and start of production is scheduled for the end of 2016.
The overall plant covers 2,5 million square metres.
The German OEM in South America, Mercedes, has chosen Geico as a guarantee for its top-level technology solutions, EFFICIENCY and innovative approach as Mercedes top management team could realize when visiting Geico’s R&D facilities Pardis Innovation Centre last May.

After being awarded of Mercedes new project in Brazil, now the German Car Manufacturer gives Geico the contract for the capacity expansion for its paintshop in Chakan, India.
The new contract that Mercedes has given Geico is an enormous success for the Italian supplier who in few months has received a double recognition for its top-level technological solutions and innovative approach. “We are very proud of that”, says Ali Reza Arabnia, Chairman, President and CEO of Geico Taikisha Group, “This is an important success since Geico has entered once again the German market.”
Last December Geico awarded an important project from Geely Holding Group in China.
The plant is located in Zhangijakou, Hebei with year production of 120.000 Volvo of Geely and Volvo passenger cars.
The first Geely’s delegation came to Geico’s R&D facilities Pardis Innovation Centre in July 2013 and then returned last December during the final negotiations of the contract.

On June 27th, Taikisha resolved to acquire 51% of membership interest of Encore Automation, an engineering company in robot application system field which is the same case with Taikisha’s Automation System Head Office of Paint Finishing System Division and owns unique automatic wiping, polishing system as well, system to paint aircrafts. Its main clients are American car manufacturers located mainly in North America and aircraft manufacturers.
Taikisha has been continuously aiming to develop group organizations to cope with globalization of business and further to strengthen its competitiveness. Through close cooperation with Encore Automation which had succeeded the technology and sales capabilities of Former Encore, Taikisha aims to achieve further increase in robot application system business of Paint Finishing System Division in North American market as well, strengthening the after sales network in North American market. On top of it, Taikisha will expand robot application system business of Encore Automation also in markets other than North America through Company’s overseas network.
Furthermore the new acquisition enhances GeicoTaikisha Alliance’s commercial strategy which constantly aims to strengthen its competitiveness worldwide.
Ali Reza Arabnia, 59, Chairman, President and CEO of GeicoTaikisha Group specialized in original coating plants for the automotive industry, was awarded the Knighthood by the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano for his extraordinary contribution to improve the Country’s industrial performance, technology, and wellbeing of its employees, and his community.The Ceremony took place last October 23rd at Quirinal Palace in Rome together with the other 24 Knights who received the honour.
The award of knighthood was announced on May 23rd and Ali Reza Arabnia received it with great surprise and dedicated this significant recognition to all those people who have always supported him. He said:
“This is a great honour for me. From the bottom of my heart, I dedicate it to my Family and all the people who have been working with me for the last 30 years.I will never forget that I would not be where I am without them.”

It’s time to ride on J-Bike!
Geico has launched its new green initiative to promote its employees’ well-being and health; 6 city bikes – 3 for men and 3 for women – are now parked outside in Geico’s courtyard.
In addition to the corporate gym, the so called Teasing Fridays – cultural events which take place every 6 Fridays, and the exhibitions in the gallery of Laura’s Garden of Thoughts, J-Bikes represent another concrete sign of the continuous care towards Geico’s employees directly supported by the Arabnia family.
And there is more: employees can go for a ride in their spare time and J-Bikes are zero-impact which means being in line with Geico’s mission in business that is creating a self-sufficient paintshop.
Geico has been present for more than one year in Brazil in the state of Pernambuco for the realization of Fiat’s greenfield paintshop that will cover an area of 4.4 million square meters and will have an annual production of 200 thousand cars for the Brazilian and Latin American market.

Geico, together with Fiat and partner suppliers have taken part into the charity project “O novos amogos de Goiana-PE”, financing the realization of the new school in Goiana, 5 km far from the site, and it was inaugurated on April 12th.

It was a great occasion to show factually our engagement and our attention to society and especially to the wellbeing and regard towards our main resource, people”, says the President and CEO of Geicotaikisha Group, Ali Reza Arabnia.
Surcar is the most important international conference where customers and suppliers of the automotive industry examine the tendencies and the innovative technologies of the body painting process. During this conference some representatives of different companies are chosen to make a presentation of their ideas for the future of automotive industry in front of many top managers who are decision makers in the industry.
On the occasion of its 50th Anniversary, exceptionally the 2014 edition took place in Shanghai and not in France (Cannes) as it was the past editions and for two years consecutively.
During the conference there are three awards given to projects or companies for their outstanding performances. The first one is for the Technology and Geico and Qoros, a joint venture car maker made by the Chinese Chery and the Israelian Quantum with whom Geico is finalizing the most modern paintshop in the world in China ranked first and won the Award.
The second is for the Innovation and here Geico ranked second after Henkel.
The third award, which is the most important as it represents the Jury’s made by car makers and independent experts in automotive development and manufacturing, went to Geico again, which ranked the best among the winners.
Fiat has awarded Geico for the realization of the greenfield paintshop in Brazil, in Goiana in the state of Pernambuco. The new plant will cover an area of 4.4 million square meters and will have an annual production of 200 thousand cars.
The new plant is the second one in Brazil – after Betìm – made by the Italian car manufacturer that is investing 3 bilion Reais – about 1.3 billion Euros – in the whole project. The Pernambuco plant will produce new car models developed in Brazil for the Brazilian and Latin American market.
Geico is very proud of being part of this Italian adventure in a country where, over the years, both Fiat and Geico still are the main actors. Furthermore Geico’s innovative technologies concerning eco-sustainability and energy saving developed by its green internal division – Pardis- have been adopted for the realization of the paintshop area.

Geico celebrates the first sellable body together with Qoros, the new joint venture Chery/Quantum in China, two years later the award of the international tender for the realization of a new complete paintshop.
The fully automated plant will be one of the most modern in the world with 33% saving of energy consumption and CO2 emissions and with an annual capacity of 200,000 cars to be extended to 350,000 in two years.
Geico was responsible of the entire project, both in terms of engineering and project management. Qoros has installed some of Geico’s most modern and advanced technologies such as J-Flex, the dipping rotating system for pretreatment and catophoresis, and Dryspin, drys scrubber.
Once more Geico is the winner of Avtovaz complete plant in Togliattigrad, after the first one awarded in 2010.

The new complete paint shop, with the annual capacity of 300.000 passenger cars, is part of an important automotive pole which produces about one million cars a year over 90 miles (140 km) of production lines.
An honour and a real pride to be the first for top car manufacturers in the world who have awarded Geico with 4 important projects in the last 5 years (Renault Nissan Chennai, India, and Tangeri, Marocco; Avtovaz 2 in Togliatti, Russia).
On Sunday 14th October, Ali Reza Arabnia, Chairman, President & CEO of Geico, was awarded with “La Spiga d’Oro”, the highest municipal award, during the 22nd edition of the ceremony held in Cinisello Balsamo, in one of the historical residences of the city. Amongst the guests, there were the city’s highest authorities.
An example of corporate cultural innovation, a natural and sincere respect for work and employees and a strong inclination towards international markets are the main reasons that distinguish Geico and its President and make them worthy of such a prestigious price.

On June 7th Geico organized an open day at Pardis Innovation Center for students and professors of Politecnico di Milano from chemistry, materials and energy faculties.
The open day was organized by Geico & Poliefun, the association founded by companies of the
surface coating business and the University, under the guidance of the Politecnico di Milano, in order to create a meeting point between work and study.
The visit of the 15 students and 3 professors was both a real and virtual experience, amongst technological solutions such as conveyor systems for the pretreatment of the bodies, the new wet and dry scrubbers of painting booths, the new flexible ovens, and a virtual trip in a paint shop in Geico’s Interactive Engineering Lab.
“It was a pleasure for Geico to host some of the future engineers in our Pardis Innovation Center and guide them in the coating world, giving them the possibility to see from near what they have studied on books. Now we can only wish themthe best for their studies!” says Paolo Colombaroli, Executive Director Innovation.
Geico was awarded “Best of The Best 2012” amongst 150 candidates from Brianza area (this is in north of Milan and is one of the most industrialized areas in Europe). The Head of Province, the Mayor, and other local authorities were present too. The contest was organized by Hubnet Communication and Aldo Varenna Private banker, La compagnie Financière Edmond de Rothschild Banque.
The 150 candidates were divided into 17 categories and Geico was one of the candidates in that of “Innovation” where we were ranked First. In the end of the evening, amongst these 17 winners of various categories, Geico won the most important award; being “The Best of The Best 2012”.
Dr. Arabnia, President and Ceo of Geico says “With more than 400 people present from the most important companies in Italy, I was so proud to receive these two trophies on behalf of Geico. Since 2010, Geico has been under study continuously as “Success Story” by many and lately we have been subject to so many recognitions that quite frankly makes me personally a little uncomfortable, though totally proud. Geico was awarded with a Certificate of Honor for outstanding dissertation in the 15th National Painting and Coating Technology Information Exchange Meeting and business vehicles, engineering machinery, rail transportation coating technology seminarheld in Hefei, China, last May 28th.
During the conference, Geico focused its presentation on innovative and sustainability projects, showing their application in QOROS plant, one of the most important in China and the most innovative one worldwide in terms of technological solutions and energy efficiency.

On May 17th the Lorenzetti Award Ceremony was held at “Il Sole 24 Ore” headquarter in Milan to award the best listed and unlisted companies amongst 211 candidates.
Geico ranked first amongst the unlisted companies for the “Independence of its Board, Protection of Minority shareholders, and its transparent Business Conduct”.

The Lorenzetti Award was created by GC Governance Consulting in order to award boards, companies, institutions, managers, and directors that have adopted best practices in corporate management and have developed tools for an efficient corporate governance during the last three years.

In 1997 Geico won the first contract for the realization of the greenfield plant in Curitiba with a production of 20 jph; then in 1999 Geico doubled the production capacity to 40 jph. Today Geico has been reconfirmed by Renault for another increase in the production capacity to 60 jph in order to face the higher and higher demand of the Brazilian automotive market.
This is a difficult and challenging work since we operate in an existing and working plant, that is why we have short time for its completion. The plant will stop for 8 weeks and in January 2013 will start again with a capacity production of 60 jph.
